This geoWrite file, contains several comments, hints, and warnings that were posted to Q-Link's "GEOS ARENA" Bulletin Boards at one time or another.
The information discusses:
- Different and somewhat incompatible, versions of geoPublish & geoPub-Laser.
- Which version of geoPub-Laser YOU should be using with your geoPublish.
- Ways to printout your new Post Script documents.
- and general info on the PS Patcher itself.

GeoPub-Laser is copyrighted by BSW. BSW has given permission to allow uploading and
downloading of the geoPub-Lasers as "upgrades" to existing software.
Both versions - the "newer" 1.0, and the latest "fixed" 1.8 - have been included in this ARC file, so users can have quick access either version.

GeoPubLaser
(3/10/88), that works with the
Post Script Patch
2.0 by Jim Collette, it's for people who have
earlier
versions of GeoPublish (11/24/87.)
It will patch correctly, and print fine.
This version is also on the latest "2-disk" set of
GeoPublish
, but will only print the first page correct on that version.
GeoPublaser
1.8 (10/25/86), will work fine on latest
GeoPublish
(10/4/88.)
oldest
GeoPublaser
1.0 (11/19/87) will print garbage if PS patched. Do not use that one.

GeoPublaser
1.8, is to be used only with the (10/4/88) version of
GeoPublish
The one on the 2-disk
GeoPublish
will only print page one correctly of a multiple page
GeoPublish
document. [ This was hopefully corrected. ]
GeoPublaser
1.8, has been patched to work with the latest version of
GeoPublish
ONLY.
If you have an earlier/older
GeoPublish
, use the version of GeoPublaser that came with it, or the (3/10/88) version.

To keep things simple, use the (3/10/88) version of
GeoPubLaser
for ALL versions of
GeoPublish
EXCEPT those versions on the 2-disk set.
Anything before the 2-disk
GeoPublish
should be used with
GeoPubLaser
(3/10/88).
GeoPublish
's ON or AFTER the 2-disk set, should be used with
GeoPubLaser
1.8.

(No other date or time may work -- This is the 2-disk upgrade you can get free from Berkeley by sending in your old original geoPublish disk requesting the newest version.)

PS.PATCH 2.0

(This was uploaded to Q-link by GeoRep Jim, or Jimbob2 as he was called before becoming a Rep.)
------------------
Be sure to have these versions. I've heard that the new GeoPublish has problems with geoPublish files created with earlier versions so be sure your document was created only with the new version!
-----------------
The first time they try it, laser printing companies will probably have trouble sending your pure postscript file to their laser printer. Tell them NOT to load your postscript file into a program such as a word processor or it may become corrupted and ruined.
My laser printing company says they dumped it as a "font file" (whatever that is).
Good luck! If your laser printing company still has problems, they could call my company, "O'Neal Business Forms" at 205-534-0453. Tell them Terry Morgan referred you so they'll know what you are talking about.
--------------
If your document stops half-way through or hangs up on a page, or just won't print, go back and remove some of the layout areas and reripple the text.
Good luck! I've had much success and laser print 2 long newsletters a month this way.
Postscript files are VERY large. It may take the laser printer over 10 minutes to print a page with a lot of pictures.
Laser printers are very touchy. Things that appear centered on your screen may be off center after laser printing. Nonlaser fonts may not print at all or be substituted by the laser printer for a laser font, i.e. every time I use "headerette" the laser printer refuess to recognize it and prints it as "LW Cowell". I can't figure it!

Well, here is the second generation PostScript patcher. With this new version, most of the shortcomings of the first one are gone:
- you now can use any combination of disk drives,
- print from either drive A or B.
- And it can be used with a single drive too!
- Plus, you don't need a REU anymore.
See the "ps.patch2.doc" file for information on how to use the
PS.Patch.
ONE NOTE:
It seems to be unreliable if the data files aren't all on the same disk with
GeoPubLaser
GeoLaser
- try to get all your files + the
Geolaser
program on 1 disk. You can still print to either drive though.
Like the first
PS.Patch
, this is shareware. If you get good use out of it, a donation is requested! ($5-$10 seems reasonable especially if it saves you money from having stuff laser printed other places!)

Thanks to Bill Coleman whose Single Byte Disk Interface routine made this new version possible! And also to all of you who've supported me with this!
One thing - the files it saves are meant to go directly to the
LaserWriter
AS IS. If you do any kind of Ascii conversion on them, they may not print. Just dump them straight.
Guess that's about it - good luck, and enjoy!!!

One thing - from talking with "
LadyCarmen",
e think that the main reason why so many of you are having problems printing the PS files is because of different versions of the PostScript language. Supposedly, the latest one is version 47 (I think), which is supposedly incompatible with an earlier one, version 46.
I don't know which version the GEOS stuff outputs. I DO know that
GeoLaser
has been around for a long time, and since my patch only works on the newest version, I don't know if BSW has changed their PostScript at all. But there is a good chance that GEOS's PostScript is too old for some of the new versions of PostScript.
Just a hunch.
This all applies to people who are having trouble getting the files to print - if you have trouble with it on the GEOS end, it's related to the patch file. But anything from there is most likely a PostScript compatibility problem.

Use the Latest
GeoPub Laser
program, or you may have problems with original
GeoPub Laser
The newest version of the
GeoPublish
package has
Graphics Grabber
and
Print Master
graphics in albums and also with large photos of Statue of Liberty and Space Shuttle.
The latest dates for
GeoPublish
programs are as follows:
GeoPublish v1.0 10/4/88 11:20 AM
GeoPublaser v1.0 3/10/88 11:00 PM
Good Luck.
If you do not have latest
GeoPub
ask BSW for a copy.

SUBJ: ps.patch 2.0 question #1
FROM: Andy ME
DATE: 06/25/89
Is it possible to transfer the output file to an IBM disk and pint on a PostScript printer? Does the conversion from a GEOS file to a Commodore SEQ file damage the output?
The PostScript files this produces are already in Commodore format - no conversion is necessary.
I use
Cross Link
to convert the files to IBM format, then dump them to a
LaserWriter
So the answer is YES!

I have found that before I can get the file to print on our laser printer I must first insert the characters:
@%!
(note: a percent sign, then an exclamation mark)
These must be the first two characters in the file. I simply edit the file at work before printing. These characters informs the laser printer that post script program is comming.
